* Production of liquid fuels using Coal To Liquids technology
* Electricity generation using gas turbines / combined cycles
* As feedstock in different petrochemical processes

UCG clean coal technology has been successfully operating commercially at a number of sites in the ex-Soviet Union for more than 40 years, where two plants are still in operation. In this application the syngas is used primarily for power generation and heating.

Automobile propulsion technology under development include gasoline/electric and, battery electric vehicles, hydrogen cars, bio fuels and various alternative fuels. Research into future alternative forms of power include the development of fuel cells, Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition, Stirling engined, and even using the stored energy of compressed air or liquid nitrogen.
