Initially a standalone German car manufacturer, Maybach Motorenbau exists as a sub-brand of German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz.
The company was founded in 1909, by Wilhelm Maybach and his son, Karl Maybach. In 1912, the company switched names from Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau to Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH.
While the original manufacturing focus was on diesel and petrol engines for rail cars and Zeppelins, in 1919 the company shifted towards automotive products. For twenty years, Maybach built some of the most opulent vehicles of the time, then stopped production during the second World War in order to design and manufacture tank engines for the Nazi army.
Although Daimler bought the company in 1960, it wasn’t until 1997 that the next Maybach concept was presented during the Tokyo Motorshow. Two production model versions were introduced, based on the concept. The smaller Maybach 57 and the longer Maybach 62 were both powered by 6-liter bi-turbo V12 engines that pushed out 603hp and 1,000 Nm of torque.
Unfortunately, only 157 Maybach cars were sold worldwide between 2002 and 2010. Mercedes-Benz took a different approach in redesigning and revamping the Maybach brand, hiring an Aston Martin engineer to refresh the newer models. However, as sales did not increase in spite of various efforts, Mercedes-Benz officially announced the dismantle of the Maybach brand in 2011. The last car was built in December 2012.
