The Ford Mustang is one of North America’s representative automotive products in the muscle car segment. Built by Ford Motor Company, the Mustang was initially based on the compact car platform designed for the Ford Falcon.
Ford introduced the Ford Mustang I concept in 1962. It came out as a two-seater, which in 1963 was evolved to Mustang II a four-seater design. Actual production of the first-generation mustang started in 1965, with a particular 1964 ½ Mustang Convertible with serial number #1 was sold to Stanley Tucker. The first gen was available as a convertible roadster with mid-mounted V4 engine sourced from the Ford Taunus.
The second-generation Ford Mustang was produced for just 4 years, between 1974 and 1978. Lee Iacocca, the designer of the original Mustang became president of Ford Motor Company and started plans for a smaller and more fuel-friendly Mustang. Introduced just two months before the ’73 oil crisis, the Mustang II competed against models such as Toyota Celica and Ford Capri.
As of 1979, Mustang III was launched. Designed on the larger Fox platform, Ford Mustang III allowed for extensive passenger space (having 4 seats) bigger trunk and engine bay. It was marketed and sold as a coupe, hatchback and convertible under a number of trims. Engines varied between a 2.3-liter inline-4 and the 5-liter V8 engine.
Between 1994 and 2004 Ford built the fourth generation Mustang, also coming along with the first large-scale revamping. With enhanced RWD system and revised V6 and V8 small-block engines, the Mustang GT was able to push 225hp through a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The fifth generation Ford Mustang cars (2005-2014) reintroduced the convertible chassis on the GT Premium trim. It was revealed at the 2004 NAIAS and was based on the D2C platform. 4-liter SOHC V6 and 4.6-liter V8 engines were used pushing 210hp and 310hp, respectively.
The sixth generation Mustang was first shown during the 2015 auto shows in Europe and United States. The main changes include a wider body and lower body, redesigned grille and bigger passenger space. Ford also included the 2.3L EcoBoost inline-4 engine with 310hp. Also, the 5-liter Coyote V8 was added to the highest trim, developing 435hp to the wheel.
