Headquartered in Palo Alto, California, Tesla was founded by billionaire visionary and entrepreneur Elon Musk. Formerly known as Tesla Motors, the company focuses on producing and marketing electric cars in the luxury and crossover segments, as well as selling Li-ion high-capacity batteries and solar panels.
The philosophy behind Tesla cars is to be able to develop as an independent manufacturer and provide a cheap alternative to fossil fuel cars that will compete and eventually outperform classic engines. As expected, the name Tesla comes from the famous electrical engineer Nikola Tesla.
Founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, Tesla was born after GM decided to recall and destroy all its EV1 electric vehicles in the same year. Elon Musk joined as chairman in 2004, while also taking part in various operational roles in the company.
The first model released by Tesla was a roadster aimed towards early adopters. The electric motors were derived directly from the original design established in 1882 by Nikola Tesla. The Tesla Roadster was also the first electric car to make use of Li-Ion batteries, which were to become common in most electronics and other electric cars.
Tesla cars began deliveries of the Model S on June 22nd, 2012 in US. The first delivery towards the European continent didn’t happen until August 2013. Almost one year later, the first Model S units were shipped to China. With four base configurations, the Model S was able to attain a 335-mile run with a single charge.
The Model X is Tesla’s first crossover SUV. It features an aluminum body and falcon-wing doors which open vertically to improve ergonomics in tight spaces. In 2016, the Model X was the best-selling electric car in Norway, taking the place of Model S.
The Model 3 is Tesla’s third generation car. Initially called Model E, Tesla had to pick a new name after Ford issued a lawsuit as it owns the trademark for the name. Just one week after it was unveiled, Tesla reported 325.000 preorders on the Model 3.
More recently, Tesla has announced a new Roadster model with impressive dynamic capabilities as well as a line of electric trucks.
