Luxury hypercar manufacturer Bugatti was launched initially back in 1909 by the Italian-born Ettore Bugatti. The company was founded in Molsheim, Alsace.
The Bugatti cars produced here were renowned for their beautiful designs and also for their huge performance, winning multiple races and trophies along the way. Along the more famous models of the brand there is the Type 35 Grand Prix, Royale and Atlantic.
Unfortunately, the death of Ettore Bugatti in 1947 resulted in the company getting close to bankruptcy and eventually closed down after only 8000 cars went out the factory gates. Many projects were stopped, including designs for supercharged grand prix engines. It took until the early 90s when an Italian entrepreneur restarted the business, focusing solely on highly-limited, production sportscars.
The revival process was undertaken by Paolo Stanzani and Marcello Gandini, former designers of the iconic Lamborghini Miura and Countach. The result of their efforts materialized under the shape of Bugatti EB110GT, one of the first production vehicles to make use of carbon-fiber chassis. One model was sold to the multiple F1 champion Michael Schumacher.
In 1998, Volkswagen acquired Bugatti and presented the EB118 concept at the Paris Auto show of that year. The car featured a huge W18 engine pushing out 547 bhp.
It took until 2005 that Bugatti managed to properly resurface with the famous Bugatti Veyron 16.4, the first production car to pass the 1000bhp mark. Production was stopped ten years later, with the last model (Veyron Grand Vitesse La Finale) being sold on 23rd February.
One year later, Bugatti hints to an even more power successor for the Veyron. The 2016 Geneva Motor Show hosted the reveal of Chiron, a 2-door coupe powered by an 8-liter W16 engine capable of no less than 1479 hp and a chassis with unprecedent stiffness per degree of twist.
