A new car is generally referred to as either a brand-new model just out the design table or production line, or an enhanced version of a previously existing car.
It is common practice among automakers to build cars according to a lifecycle. Usually, a lifecycle lasts anywhere between 3 to 6 years and it is split in multiple stages. One of the more important stages of a car lifecycle is the mid-life upgrade, or better known as face-lift.
What happens is that automakers release a car on the market, then take in account feedback from users and adopt changes to the model roughly halfway through its lifecycle. The revised car model is called a facelift and generally contains fixes for problems, better performance or revised styling.
New car models and facelifts are showcased generally at private brand shows or general auto shows such as Geneva, New York or Tokyo. New cars are tested before release to the market, usually under heavy camouflage to cover up design patterns. Testing is done either on enclosed tracks or on public roads.
