Volkswagen launched Golf R, the most powerful production Golf yet
It has an impressive 315 horsepower and is the fastest and most powerful series-production version of Volkswagen’s family hatchback.
Golf R went on sale in UK starting from £39,270. The new model becomes the fastest accelerating Volkswagen on sale with a 0-62mph time of 4.7 seconds. However, some experts say that at this price the 2020 Audi S3 is cheaper and quicker.
“Christmas has come early for fast Volkswagen fans, with not just one performance hero opening to UK customers, but two. UK buyers love hot hatchbacks like the Golf R and GTI, and these cars will represent a considerable share of all new Golf sales”, said Sarah Cox, Head of Marketing at Volkswagen UK.
Golf R is the most powerful production Golf ever, beating the previous Clubsport S’s 306bhp with a 315bhp output between 5500 and 6500rpm. Torque is also strong, with 310lb ft available at just 2000rpm, the Golf holding that peak output until 5800rpm.
The engine sends power to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox – which, along with the performance hike, enables both that 0–62mph time and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
Physical chassis improvements include stiffer adaptive dampers, a new progressive power steering system, wider alloy wheels and enormous 18-inch disc brakes on the front axle. The Golf R also rides 20mm closer to the ground than the standard hatchback, to lower its centre of gravity and improve its handling.
No manual transmission available
There will be no manual transmission available, because, as Volkswagen says, there’s just no interest for it among Golf R buyers, but to compensate VW has fettled the seven-speed dual-clutch box, focusing on reducing shift speeds and improving response via the new, larger shift paddles.
