The Hyundai Motor Company was founded by Chung Ju-yung in 1967. It is one of the biggest vehicle manufacturers in the world with headquarters in Seoul, South Korea.
Hyundai Cortina, the first car model of the brand, was released in 1968 in collaboration with Ford Motor Company. The first car fully designed by the Korean company was the Hyundai Pony, which used a Mitsubishi powertrain. The Pony exceeded sale expectations in Canada, however it wasn’t offered to the US market due to emission regulations.
The first Hyundai car to be sold on US soil was the Excel which gathered a few awards, As of 1990, Hyundai was already passing the 4-million mark in terms of car sold in the United States.
In the late 90s, Hyundai Motor Group invested heavily in upgrading and streamlining production and design process of Hyundai cars, thus being able to offer 10-year or 100.000-mile warranties for cars that were purchased in the US.
In 2008, Hyundai introduces the Genesis, a full-size executive sedan. Initially introduced as a concept during the 2007 NYIAS (New York International Auto Show), the Genesis reached its second generation in 2014. The car presents with V6 and a more powerful V8 engine units coupled to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Since 2015, Genesis acts as an independent brand targeting the US luxury segment.
Another successful model by Hyundai is the Tucson, also known as ix35 in Europe and Brazil. The model was sent into production in 2005, reached its second generation in 2009, and its third generation in 2015. The 5-door compact SUV situates below Hyundai’s large SUV mode, the Santa Fe.
Hyundai also entered the alternative fuel and electric market as early as 1991, with the MY Scoupe FFV. More recent models include the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and the Hyundai i10 Electric Vehicle.
