Kia is the second largest automotive constructor in South Korea, as of 2017. The company was founded in 1944, just as the second World War was about to end.
The original name was Kyungsung Precision Industry and the main product was production of steel tubes and bicycle parts, eventually providing the first in-house built bike in Korea.
It was in 1952 when the company name was changed to Kia and built its first vehicle (a truck under Mazda license) in 1962. The first road car for public use was built in 1974, on an integrated automotive assembly plant. The first Kia model was called Brisa and was built until 1981. In the same time, the Korean automaker was building the Fiat 132 and the Peugeot 604, both built under license.
A partnership with Ford brought Kia back into the automotive business in 1986. After only selling 26 cars in 1986, Kia managed to build and sell more than 95.000 the very next year. Later on, in 1992 Kia was incorporated in the United States and sold cars through its Oregon dealerships. As time passed, Kia cars introduced the Sephia, then the Sportage model into the United States.
After declaring bankruptcy in 1997, a large part of Kia shares was acquired by Hyundai. As of 2005, the Korean automaker decided to focus its production and marketing efforts towards the European market, with the purpose of building a strong core for further expansion. Some of the more known models sold in the European market are the Kia Cerato, Mentor (Shuma), the Sedona MVP and the Stinger liftback presented in 2017. The Stinger is one of the more powerful production cars of Kia, available either in FW and AWD versions and powered by either a 2-liter diesel or a 3.3-liter V6 petrol engine. The power is delivered to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
