The next Geneva Motor Show as late as 2022
The organizers announce that there will be no Geneva International Motor Show in 2021.
GIMS – the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) – is the largest public event in Switzerland and one of the most important for the car industry, as well as for the public. The COVID-19 pandemic that ravages the whole world gives a huge blow to the Geneva International Motor Show. The 2020 edition was cancelled due to the pandemic. The next Geneva Motor Show was scheduled for March 2021, but it won’t take place before 2022.
No event in 2021
The Committee and Council of the Foundation “Salon International de l’Automobile” have decided not to organise an event in 2021 as a majority of GIMS exhibitors who took part in a survey, stated that they would probably not participate in a 2021 edition and that they would prefer to have a GIMS in 2022. The reason is the fact that the automotive sector is currently going through a difficult phase, and exhibitors need time to recover from the effects of the pandemic. “Furthermore, it is far from certain that the current health situation would permit the organisation of an event attracting more than 600.000 visitors and 10.000 journalists next spring” – according to GIMS .
While it is likely that travel restrictions and social distancing measures will have been further relaxed by March 2021, when the show was supposed to take place, car manufacturers are unwilling to attend.
Besides, the Foundation “Salon International de l’Automobile” decided to sale GIMS TO Palexpo SA, in order to find a solution that will ensure the regulare organization of an International Motor Show in Geneva. The purchase of the assets would transfer all rights to the organization of GIMS to Palexpo SA.
The 2020 edition was cancelled only days before it was supposed to open its doors and organizers, as well as manufacturers faced a huge financial loss.
