The Rolls-Royce Motor Cars division is Britain’s most exclusive luxury automaker. The company under its current form was born in 1998 when BMW acquired the license for the Rolls-Royce and Spirit of Ecstasy trademarks from Volkswagen.

The Rolls-Royce brand existed before the 1998 acquiring by BMW, producing luxury vehicles and aircraft engines as early as 1884. The first car, the Royce 10 was built in 1904 by Henry Royce. After the introduction of the model to Charles Rolls, owner of a car dealership, a deal was made for another 4 models, with power output of 10, 15, 20 and 30hp respectively, featuring two, three, four and six-cylinder engines.

A new factory was opened in 1921 in Springfield Massachusetts where, 1,701 Rolls Royce Ghost units were built. The factory closed in 1931. After the second World War, Rolls Royce cars engineered chassis for automakers such as Bentley and developed experimental engines, such as the V12 sleeve-valve diesel.

At the brink of the next millennia, BMW’s acquisition of Rolls-Royce determined the apparition of new models, mostly inspired from the pre-war era. In 2006, Rolls-Royce announced the four-door Ghost sedan. It was introduced in 2010 and shared a number of components with BMW’s 7-series. It used BMW’s 6.6-liter twin-turbo V12 coupled to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The Ghost Series II was launched in 2014, featuring improved technology and a more efficient drivetrain.

The Wraith model was first showcased during the 2013 Geneva Motor Show as a luxury coupe, also powered by a twin-turbocharged V12 engine, pushing out 623hp.

The 4-seat luxury convertible Dawn is a more recent addition to the Rolls Royce lineup. The car is made entirely by hand and was announced during the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show.

Rolls Royce Phantom model was expected to enter production at the end of 2017 while the first sales should start during 2018.
