UAW (United Auto Workers) – Formally called "The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America" was founded in May 1935 in Detroit, Michigan with approximately 513,000 active members and upwards of 575,000 retired members in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Over the years, the UAW has achieved a number of collective bargaining firsts, such as:

• First employer-paid health insurance plan for industrial workers;
• First cost-of-living allowances;
• Pioneering role in product quality improvements;
• Landmark job and income security provisions; and
• Implementation of comprehensive training and educational programs.

In addition to having played a vital role in passing such landmark legislation as Medicare and Medicaid, the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), the Employee Retirement Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act.
