Electronic Stability Control (ESC) – A computerized safety system technology that improves the vehicle's handling by detecting when the driver might lose control of the vehicle and automatically applies individual brakes to individual wheels in order to help "steer" the vehicle and preventing spinouts and roll-overs.

While ESC is the generic term recognized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and other authorities, manufacturers use a variety of different trade names for it:
