Founded back in 1949, Abarth is a pure Italian race and road car company. Abarth is acting as a subsidiary of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and designs cars mostly for the European market.

Carlo Abarth, founder of the Italian brand started out as sporting director of Cistalia factory. Foreseeing the imminent financial collapse of the factory, Carlo Abarth set forth in 1949 and placed the founding stone of Abarth & C with financial support from Armando Scagliarini.

The first car fully built by Abarth is the 1950 205A. In just a decade, Abarth became one of the main racing names in hill climbing and racing, making Porsche 904 and Ferrari Dino to fear their place in the industry.

In 1971 Fiat took over ownership of Abarth and made it the group’s racing division. Large improvements were mainly obtained in the rally department, with cars like Fiat 124 Abarth Rally and the 131 Abarth competing at the highest level.

Ten years later, Abarth is dissolved and replaced by Fiat Auto GestioneSportiva. It took until 2007 to see the rebirth of Abarth & C. Although still owned by Fiat Group Automobiles, this time Abarth is working as an independent unit. Noticeable cars build since the revival are the Abarth Grande Punto S2000 and Abarth Grande Punto.
