Value-Added Standard Features Aplenty

The 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander boasts a long list of no-cost standard features and convenient amenities that help to make this crossover utility vehicle live up to the term "a lot of car for the money." These include air-conditioning with micron air filtration; helpful flat-folding 1st and 2nd row seating; and exquisite-sounding 6 speaker 140-watt AM/FM/CD/MP3 player with Digital Signal Processor (DSP), equalization control and speed compensated volume; remote keyless entry with panic alarm feature; cool-looking rear combination LED tail lamps with clear lenses; cruise control with steering wheel-mounted switchgear; a 60:40 rear split-fold 2nd row seat; auto off headlights; intermittent rear window wiper/washer and electric room window defroster with timer; and numerous easily accessed 12-volt accessory outlets.

This outstanding Mitsubishi crossover has an impressive number of included safety features and technologies that allow it to achieve a high level of tractability, handling and stability. Among these high-tech features are Active Stability Control (ASC) and Traction Control Logic (TCL); anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD); a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) along with an advanced supplemental restraint system (SRS) consisting of advanced dual-stage front air bags with seat position sensors; side-impact curtain air bags for 1st and 2nd row occupants; front seat thorax side air bags; active front seat head rests and head impact absorption roof and pillar trim. Providing an additional level of protection as well as helping to improve fuel efficiency, all Outlander models have a sturdy all-aluminum roof structure that helps to improve the vehicle's center of gravity and helps to reduce the vehicle's overall weight. This design feature also helps to improve stability and handling capability.

Dynamic Duo: A Pair of Powerful and Efficient Engines

The 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander can be equipped with either a capable inline-4-cylinder or more powerful V-6 engine.
The 4-cylinder unit (available in the ES and SE Outlander models) packs quite a punch from its DOHC 16-valve 2.4-liter normally-aspirated engine that includes an aluminum block and head and Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) variable valve-timing that helps to reduce harmful exhaust emissions and fuel consumption while boosting power output. Running on regular unleaded-grade fuel, the stalwart engine produces a full 167 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and a beneficial 167 lb.-ft. of torque at the 4,100 rpm mark. The bore and stroke of this power plant measure 88.0 x 97.0 mm, respectively, while its compression ratio is 10.5:1.

Helping to improve fuel economy, this engine is paired with a high-tech Sportronic® continuously-variable transmission (CVT) that includes sporty steering wheel-mounted magnesium-alloy paddle shifters on the 2012 Outlander SE that allow the driver to manually select gears when so desired.

This adept engine/transmission combination give the Outlander ES and SE editions a tow rating of 1,500 lbs. - enough gusto to easily transport a tent trailer, a pair of personal watercraft or ATVs.

Providing power to the top of the line Outlander GT is an exceptionally smooth-running SOHC 3.0-liter V-6 engine that delivers a stout 230 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and a welcome 215 lb.-ft. of torque at only 3,750 rpm, giving the outlander GT and maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. like the four-cylinder unit, this engine features a high 10.5:1 compression ratio, MIVEC variable valve-timing technology as well as possessing its cylinder heads and engine block composed entirely of strong and lightweight aluminum-alloy. Bore and stroke for this engine measure 87.6 x 82.9 mm, respectively.

A neat technical feature of this V-6 engine is Mitsubishi's clever Idle-Neutral Logic that automatically switches the car into neutral whenever the car comes to a stop to lessen fuel consumption. A responsive 6-speed Sportronic® automatic transmission works in concert with the engine to deliver robust power at the driven wheels; this transmission allows the driver to make gear shifts via magnesium-alloy paddles located behind the steering wheel.
