Body and interior
The A4 is a large and spacious mid-size vehicle. Its body, most of which is made of high-strength and ultra high-strength steels, is rigid, lightweight and offers good protection in the event of a collision.

The sedan offers a trunk capacity of 480 liters (16.95 cubic ft). With the rear seat backs folded down (a standard feature in the quattro versions), capacity increases to 962 liters (33.97 cubic ft). With the A4 Avant these values are 490 and 1,430 liters (173.0 and 50.50 cubic ft).

The interior presents all of Audi’s strengths: dignified looks, uncompromising fit and finish, and logically intuitive user controls. When the A4 is fitted with an onboard navigation system, its center tunnel console houses a large color monitor and the MMI control system. In the front, Audi offers climate-controlled comfort seats as a high-end option, featuring small built-in fans which provide six-speed ventilation to the seat back and cushion.

Audi offers a particularly broad choice of engines for the A4 model series. All of them feature direct-fuel injection and, with the exception of the top-of-the-line 3.2 FSI engine, are also turbocharged. The V6 and the 2.0 TFSI feature different versions of the Audi valvelift system, which uses variable valve lift to further improve torque. A start-stop system is standard with many of the engines; all come standard with a recuperation system.

The most efficient model in the A4 lineup with only 119 grams CO2/km (191.51 grams per mile) is the 2.0 TDIe. Its four-cylinder diesel engine produces 100 kW (135 hp) and 320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) of torque. In the sedan the engine averages just 4.6 liters of diesel per 100 km (51.13 US mpg).

This ‘e’ model benefits from the synergetic expertise offered by Audi’s modular efficiency platform. The 2.0 TDIe features a longer gear ratio, easy-running tires, and a number of special aerodynamic details. The lower ride height improves the drag coefficient, while the on-board computer with efficiency program provides the driver with tips about when to shift and fuel-efficient driving.

New to the model family are two particularly ecological models. A sophisticated scrubbing system in the A4 3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro eliminates nitrides of oxygen so effectively that the V6 diesel satisfies all US emission standards and also the future Euro 6 standard. The A4 2.0 TFSI flexible fuel is designed for operation on bioethanol E 85.

Power transmission for the A4 model line is provided by one of four high-tech solutions: a six-speed transmission including gear-change indicator, the six-speed tiptronic automatic transmission, the continuously variable multitronic, and the seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission. The quattro permanent all-wheel drive system is, as in most Audi models, slightly rear-biased. It is available starting at 105 kW (143 hp); in the 3.0 TDI it is standard equipment. In addition, Audi offers the sport differential as an option with the two V6 engines. The sport differential distributes the engine power between the rear wheels as needed for even more dynamic driving performance.

The chassis of the Audi A4 is very complex. The links are made of aluminum; the front suspension features a five-link configuration. Audi also offers the optional Audi drive select control system, which is available in a number of stages. In the basic version, it influences the engine’s throttle response, the automatic transmission’s shift points, and the steering’s mode of operation. The driver can switch these systems among three different modes. When equipped with the MMI navigation system plus, an additional mode is available enabling a custom profile to be created.

Audi drive select is only available with one or more additional technologies – the sport differential, the adaptive damper control, and the dynamic steering, whose superposition gear can vary the steering ratio by nearly 100 percent from direct when maneuvering at low speeds to indirect on the highway. If the A4 threatens to oversteer, the system countersteers with short impulses. The system also helps to combat understeering and assists with braking when the car has traction on only one side.

A new technology that further improves driving dynamics comes standard on all front-wheel drive models in the A4 line: The electronic differential lock makes the already agile handling even more neutral. By briefly pulsing the brakes of the front inside wheel, which is under a reduced load, it enables the car to accelerate even out of tight curves without understeer or wheel slip.

Assistance and communications systems
A wide range of assistance systems are offered for the A4 family. The radar-supported adaptive cruise control (ACC) system adjusts the car’s speed and the distance to the vehicle ahead by accelerating and braking as appropriate. In critical situations the integrated braking guard admonishes the driver to brake, with the system’s warning signals varying in strength with the danger of the situation. Audi lane assist alerts the driver before he or she moves out of the lane. The Audi side assist system is a lane-change safety feature with an LED display to indicate critical situations.

Audi also offers a large choice of communication and infotainment features. The MMI navigation system, the top-of-the-line MMI navigation plus with a large hard drive as well as the concert and symphony audio systems allow a cell phone to be integrated as a Bluetooth car phone. The sound system from the Danish Bang & Olufsen brand provides luxury-class HiFi enjoyment.

The Audi A4 allroad quattro
With its permanent all-wheel drive, the A4 allroad quattro is equally at home on road and off. It is somewhat larger than the A4 Avant on which it is based, particularly with respect to height. It offers 180 millimeters (7.09 in) more ground clearance, and numerous design details underscore its potent character. Here, too, the trunk holds from 490 to 1,430 liters (17.30 to 50.50 cubic ft) of luggage. Optional features include a load-securing set and an electromechanical rear hatch.

Audi delivers the A4 allroad quattro with a gasoline engine or one of three diesel engines. The 2.0 TDI with 105 kW (143 hp) combines the recuperation system with the start-stop system. Whereas both 2.0 TDI engines are combined with a six-speed manual transmission, the 2.0 TFSI and the 3.0 TDI can optionally transmit power to a seven-speed S tronic. The optional vehicle-dynamics control system – Audi drive select – enables dynamic road handling.

The engines:

* 2.0 TFSI quattro with 155 kW (211 hp)
* 2.0 TDI quattro with 105 kW (143 hp)
* 2.0 TDI quattro with 125 kW (170 hp)
* 3.0 TDI quattro with 176 kW (240 hp)

The equipment, data and prices specified in this document refer to the model range offered in Germany.
