Compact performance with premium appointments

The new 2005 Saab 9-2X is the next significant step in the biggest product development program in Saab’s history. It joins the 9-3 Sport Sedan and Convertible, and 9-5 Sedan and SportWagon, in the lineup of the fastest growing European premium car brand in the North American market.

With standard full-time all-wheel-drive, powerful engines and distinctive European design, the Saab 9-2X is a unique and early offering in a car segment just emerging in the North American market: the premium sport compact segment.

"The Saab 9-2X adds a unique dimension to our product offerings," said Peter Augustsson, Saab's President and CEO. "Like the recently launched Saab 9-3 models, it is an extremely dynamic car that calls out to enthusiastic drivers. Also, its place in the market will attract new, young customers to Saab."

The 9-2X is available in two models: the 9-2X Linear, with a responsive 2.5L four-cylinder engine, and the high-performance 9-2X Aero, with a 227-horsepower (169-kw) turbocharged and intercooled engine. For many customers, the Saab 9-2X will be their first premium brand vehicle, with prices starting below $23,000 in the United States. Additionally, customer surveys show that up to 40 percent of North Americans are looking for all-wheel drive in their next vehicle – it’s a standard feature with the 9-2X.

9-2X design: progressive with a strong, dynamic character

The new 9-2X takes a number of styling cues from recent concept and production vehicles and incorporates them in a fun-to-drive, versatile five-door vehicle package that is unmistakably Saab in appearance.

"As the new 9-2X is tremendously fun to drive, and since we are targeting a young and enthusiastic customer, we decided to emphasize its strong and dynamic character and even add a bit more of an aggressive touch compared to the rest of the Saab lineup," said Ola Granlund, head of the Saab 9-2X design team. "It has a strong face and sleek, Scandinavian lines."

The vehicle retains Saab’s recognizably curvaceous front end styling, which harmoniously integrates the familiar three-hole-grille and the low, horizontally emphasized headlamps that wrap around into the sides of the vehicle. Below the bumper area, a pronounced air intake hints at the performance potential of the new sports compact, and on the top-of-the-line 9-2X Aero model, the clean line of the front hood is accentuated with an aggressive, integrated air intake that feeds the intercooler of the turbocharged engine.

As with the 9-5 Aero SportWagon, the horizontal lines in the design of the 9-2X’s rear sheetmetal contribute to the car’s wide and powerful stance. The rear apron’s dark accent provides a sporty flair, too.
9-2X performance: sporty and focused on the driver

With a wheelbase of 99.4 inches (2,525 mm) and an overall length of 175.6 inches (4,460 mm), the Saab 9-2X offers nimble handling around town and on backcountry roads. Spirited driving, too, comes from Saab’s first use of boxer-type four-cylinder engines.

The 9-2X Aero’s turbocharged and intercooled 2.0L, high-performance DOHC engine produces 227 horsepower (169 kw) at 6000 rpm and 217 lb.-ft. of torque (294 Nm) at 4000 rpm. The power plant of the Saab 9-2X Linear is a naturally aspirated 2.5L boxer that produces 165 horsepower (123 kw) at 5600 rpm and 166 lb.-ft. of torque (225 Nm) at 4000 rpm. Both models are offered with a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic transmission.

Advanced, full-time all-wheel-drive is standard with both models. Also standard is a four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes which, when teamed with a four-channel/four-sensor anti-lock brake system (ABS), provides enhanced driver control. Traction and handling performance of the 9-2X Aero is further improved with a viscous limited-slip differential at the rear.

"The Saab 9-2X is the best example yet of Saab's brand promise of delivering sporty, driver focused performance," said Kjell-Åke Eriksson, Saab executive director for future products. "It is truly designed for people who love to drive, whether that be on a demanding section of a curvy road or during a relaxed long-distance drive on the highway."

The 9-2X’s cargo area holds up to 27.9 cubic feet (790L) of stuff with the seatback up and 61.6 cubic feet (1,744L) with the seatback folded down. A 60/40-split fold-down rear seatback is standard in all 9-2X models, and the large rear luggage door opening provides easy access to the cargo area.
9-2X safety: a comprehensive package

The 9-2X also has a long list of standard safety equipment. The front and rear of the body are designed as energy-absorbing impact zones with multiple load paths, and the framework around the passenger cabin is strengthened to help resist deformation. The door beams and the reinforced B-pillar are designed to help resist the incoming crash forces resulting from certain side impact collisions.

Driver and passenger frontal air bags help to provide protection in frontal impacts. There also are head/thorax side air bags mounted in the backrests of the front seats. The side air bags are designed to help protect the torso and the head of front seat passengers in a side impact. The front seats in the Saab 9-2X also are fitted with active head restraints designed to help reduce the risk of neck injury for front seat passengers in the event of a rear-end collision.

The Saab 9-2X is equipped with three-point seatbelts on all five seating positions. To further increase the front seatbelts’ efficiency, there are front pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts in a collision. Load limiters are designed to then release the pressure of the belt to reduce the forces on front-seat occupants’ bodies.
